Gregory Franklin Williams of Berea, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2020, after a long illness. He was 63 years old. As Greg’s time for leavin’ approached, he was embraced by the warm love of his sister, Pam Harrison, and the background jams of The Allman Brothers Band.
Greg was born on October 29, 1956, in Lexington, KY. He was the only son of Eva Williams and the late Charles Williams. Although for much of his adult he struggled with personal demons, he was able to lay them to rest through his renewed commitment to God and his love for Jesus Christ. Greg is remembered by his dear mother, sisters, nephews, daughter-in-law, and son for his generous nature, humor, and great capacity for tenderness, especially in the final years of his life.
Greg’s mother and two sisters (Pam Harrison and Rebecca Williams) were fortunate for the opportunity to reconnect with Greg later in his life. And as a lifelong fan of Kentucky basketball, much of his reconnection can be attributed to Kentucky basketball. Greg was always eager and excited to off his thoughts and analysis of each Kentucky team. His mother, Eva, will miss Greg’s half-time calls, where he provided a breakdown of the first half performance.
Not only did Greg enjoy watching sports, he was known to have a silky release from anywhere on the court and a love of baseball. His son (Kelly Williams) is incredibly fortunate and thankful to have the memories of playing catch, fielding grounders, and constantly losing at H-O-R-S-E to his father. The moments Greg and Kelly shared on the field and court are memories Kelly hope to share with his future children.
And over the last few years, Greg formed a special relationship with his daughter-in-law (Junie Lim-Williams). Each Christmas Junie and Greg would scratch-off lottery tickets, compare winning, and mostly losing, numbers.
Greg was especially close to his mother and, no matter the circumstances, would always show appreciation for all the love and sacrifice she provided Greg throughout his life. He was truly blessed to have such a beautiful and compassionate mother.
Greg cherished the special relationship with his sister, Pam and Becky. Along with his mother, Eva, Pam was the foundation for much of Greg’s comfort later in his life. They truly had a special bond.
Greg will be forever missed by his nephews (Casey Poynter and Jordan Harrison). Both Casey and Jordan remember the good times with their uncle and are beholden to Greg for the respect and admiration he always displayed for their mother, Pam.
Greg is now at peace with his father, grandparents (Lee and Lucille Burnell) and his dear and loving uncles, (Jim and Jack Burnell). And while Greg did not lead the life he had planned, he can take solace in knowing his mother is proud of her dear son for being a simple kind man. Rest well, Greg. You deserve it.
Funeral services will be 2pm, Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Kenny Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 12 pm to 2pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers will include his nephews, Casey and Jordan. Honorary bearer will be his friend and roommate Kevin.
